Between Two Cities – Life in Prague and Brno

Comparing life in Brno to life in Prague is like comparing apples to oranges. Although both are incredibly beautiful places, there are some key differences between the two largest cities in the Czech Republic. Here are the main ones.

First of all, Brno is a much smaller city compared to the sprawling capital of Prague. Brno is known for its unique charm, friendly locals, and walkability. While it does have an excellent public transportation system, like Prague, chances are you won’t need it much unless you live on the outskirts.

While Brno boasts tourist attractions like a magnificent Gothic cathedral and a historic castle, it still flies under the radar in the tourism scene. Yes, it has an astronomical clock like Prague’s – but it draws far fewer visitors. The lower tourist traffic is especially noticeable in the city center and around major landmarks, meaning you won’t find long lines in the main square or at Spilberk Castle.

The result of being outside the capital and having fewer tourists? Lower prices across the board – from accommodation and food to entertainment. For example, a Pilsner beer in Brno costs about half as much as in Prague. Yet the atmosphere remains vibrant, the nightlife lively, and the pace much more relaxed compared to Prague’s occasional bustle.

On the flip side, small city life isn’t for everyone. While Brno does have major stores like Tesco and H&M, it lacks many international brand chains. The same goes for food – there are great dining options, but the variety doesn’t compare to Prague. If you’re a fan of exotic cuisine, chances are you’ll have a harder time finding it in Brno.

If you need services from certain government offices, you’ll probably have to travel to Prague. Luckily, the two cities are well connected by a network of buses and trains, making the trip relatively easy.

In Prague, the unique urban landscapes are the city’s main draw, but its thriving tourism industry also brings unexpected benefits. For example, you won’t have trouble shopping or dining out if you don’t speak Czech – English is widely understood in tourist areas.

If you’re debating between Brno’s tranquility and Prague’s convenience, one thing is certain: both cities are rich in history and tradition, offering a taste of authentic Czech life. No matter which one you choose, you really can’t go wrong.
