In 2022, around 20 million tourists entered Czechia – 71% more than in 2021!

The Czech Ministry of Tourism reveals that 19.5 million tourists visited Czechia in 2022 – an increase of over 70% compared to the previous year.

Despite this growth, the total number of tourists was still 12% lower than pre-pandemic tourism levels. Compared to 2019, Czechia also welcomed 9% more domestic tourists in 2022.

Of the total tourist numbers, 12.1 million (62.2%) were domestic travelers and 7.3 million (37.8%) were foreign tourists. Apart from Czechs, the highest number of tourists came from Germany, Slovakia, and Poland.

In this context, Jan Herget, Director of the Czech National Tourism Office, said that 2022 was marked by domestic tourism, with 12,109,732 Czechs traveling around the country last year – a 9% increase compared to 2019.

He added: “Last year, the most frequent visitors were Germans, Slovaks, and Poles. However, tourists from Asia still haven’t returned. We’re working on launching direct flights to long-distance destinations in Asia, with the first step being the resumption of direct flights from Prague to Seoul starting March 27, 2023.”

Data shows that in 2022, 1.8 million tourists arrived in Czechia from Germany. The next top countries of origin were Slovakia (780,000) and Poland (615,000). The fourth-largest tourism market was the United States (372,000 tourists), followed by the United Kingdom (316,000 visitors).

Based on data from the Czech National Tourist Board, the cities most visited by tourists last year were Prague and the South Moravian Region. 2022 was a particularly successful year for Prague – for the first time in over a decade, it reclaimed the top spot in terms of tourist arrivals.

Additional data shows that international tourists preferred to visit the Karlovy Vary region, while domestic tourists were more interested in the Hradec Králové region.

At the beginning of 2023, to promote tourism from countries such as Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, France, Germany, Poland, Austria, Spain, and Sweden, an online campaign was launched featuring ski vacations, winter cities, and Valentine’s Day. In addition, a domestic campaign was launched to encourage Czechs to visit mountain spa destinations.
